Alvin J. Denton, age 88, of Old Potter died Wednesday, May 12, 2010 in Talihina, Oklahoma. He was born on Saturday, April 8, 1922 to Zack Aude Denton and Daisy Slater Denton in Wilburton, Oklahoma.

Alvin had many loves in his life, but perhaps none greater than his family. He loved spending time with them, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was married to his wife, Gladys on Tuesday, October 21, 1941 in Wilburton, Oklahoma. They loved each other for over 68 years and that was one of their greatest accomplishments in their lives. Mr. Denton loved to work in his garden, and loved to go fishing too. Another love in Alvin’s life was the Arkansas Razorbacks. He could hardly wait for fall football to start and when football was over it was time to cheer for the basketball team. Alvin was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Potter, Arkansas; he also belonged to the VFW, American Legion, and the Disable American Veterans. Alvin was a self-employed truck driver after he was honorably discharged from the United States Army after serving during World War II.

He is preceded in death by his father, Zack Denton, his mother, Daisy Slater Denton; three brothers, Alfred Denton, Dillard Denton, and Zack Denton Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gladys Denton, of the home; his step-mother, Leona Denton of Zafra, Oklahoma; a son, Bobby Alan Denton of Potter, a daughter, Betty Smith of Mena; three half brothers, Troy Denton and his wife Jan, of Potter, Arkansas; Gary Denton and his wife Juanita, of Ludlow, Oklahoma and Kenneth Denton and his wife, Yevonne, of Mena; four half sisters, Wanda and her husband, Wayne Holt of Poteau, Oklahoma; Virginia Rose of Talihina, Oklahoma; Kathie and her husband, Floyd Branson, of Hononbia, Oklahoma and Sheri Pollard and her husband, Larry, of Ludlow, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Debra Miller and David Smith, both of Mena; three great grandchildren, Kate Miller, Joel Miller and Jacob Miller, all of Mena; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 15, 2010, at 11:00 A.M at Hall Funeral Service Chapel with Brother Keith Rose officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery in Potter immediately after the service. Visitation will be general on Friday, May 15, 2010.

Arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Service of Mena.

Pallbearers will be Joel Miller, David Smith, Jerry Denton, Rick Denton, Kenny Denton, and Jacob Miller.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Gann Cemetery C/O Beverly Bell, 230 Polk 23, Cove, Arkansas 71937.
