Leon Allen Bates, age 58 of Mena died Sunday, July 8, 2012 at his home. He was born on Saturday, August 9, 1953 to George Edward and Dessie Cebrem Scarbrough Bates in Yakima, Washington.

Leon was adventurous. He was a “Carney” for 8 years with the GCG Amusements out of Mountain View, Missouri where he was known as “Dumpy”.
Leon was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He believed that you had to do what you had to do to take care and support your family. His grandchildren gave him his greatest enjoyment. He also loved to fish.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Bates.

Leon is survived by his wife, Dena Holloway Bates of the home; two daughters, Angela Marie Bates of Heber Springs, Arkansas and Nikki O’Brien of Mena; one brother William Bates of Clinton, Missouri; two sisters, Elizabeth Sutton of Clinton, Missouri and Mary Milligan of Corder, Missouri; aunts and uncles, James and Carrie Scarbrough of Mena, Opal and Dennis Duffield of Moxee, Washington and Anna Hatterman of Quincy, Washington; three grandchildren, Raeann O’Brien, Paul O’Brien and Steven Leon Bates Reynolds all of Mena; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene in Mena, Arkansas with Pastor Ken Goodwin officiating.
Cremation services entrusted to Bowser Family Funeral Home of Mena.
